The Fight at Fort Sumter

It would seem that President Lincoln did not achieve his goal of keeping the Union together. The first shots of the war were fired today, April 12, 1861, at Fort Sumter by the Confederates. This open war now provides an opportunity for us to rid the country of slavery. The war against the South must be won! We cannot allow them to spread the immoral institution of slavery. This is not a war that can be settled with compromise; there must be only one victor, and for the sake of our country's future it must be us.

  1. Though I agree with that it war is a necessity at this point, I cannot truly condone your eagerness to make war. As a Union man you should not try to sow discord and disunity but to try and bring others to the righteous cause of the Union.

  2. I appreciate how invalid your statements are, excluding the one about Lincoln's not achieving his goal of holding the Union together. It appears as though you need to be informed. The south has no wish whatsoever to spread slavery. Would it truly make sense to increase competition in the only thing that provides us with an economy?

Do not think that even if the confederate loses this war that slavery will be so easily abolished. "In this...age there are few...[that]will acknowledge that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil in any country. It is useless to expiate on its disadvantages. I think it[s]... a greater evil to the white than to the black race... The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa... The...discipline they are undergoing is necessary for their instruction as a race"

As far as compromise goes this is exactly why the south is succeeding, northern states aren't willing to see with an open mind what exactly we need.

  3. The South will not stand for this. The North began this war and we will finish it.
